Which came first, the beer or the name?
In this case the name came first over a few shared pints with the BBC brewers. For those unfamiliar with the reference, some might consider you lucky. After coming up with the name we needed to create a brew to match. So off we went to the Louisville Beer Store for some more brainstorming. The resulting creation is a German/Indian Bropwn Ale. The two Malts we selected were Golden Promise and Brown Malt. To make this Brown Ale unique we fermented it with a Berliner Weisse yeast and large late hop additions of German Hallertau Hops. The addition of Jaggery, a palm sugar from India, provides a nutty aromaas well as a dryness to the final product. Two batches of this beer were brewed, one each at Cumberland Brewery and BBC (St Matthews). Although brewed to the same recipe, it will be interesting to note the slight differences that come form the different set of equipment at each brewery.

The Woo
Now on tap, The Woo and Runner-Up Ale. The same malt was used to brew two distinct beer styles. The first runnings from the mash was used to brew The Woo, an American Barleywine. The sugar rich first runnings allow this beer to reach a higher alcohol strength, 10% ABV. To balance the intense maltiness 22 lbs of hops were added to the kettle, almost enough to clog the system, and then another 8 lbs of Cascade hops were used for dry hopping.
Not wanting to waste the remaing sugars in the mash, we used the second runnings to brew whats traditionaly called a Small Beer. Runner-Up Ale is significantly lighter in strength and color then its older sibling. The Styrian Golding hops provide a floral aroma the complements the flavors from the belgian yeast strain we fermented it with.

Slewfoot

New this week at Cumberland Brews, Slewfoot is an amber session ale. This beer was brewed as part of our sponsorship of University of Louisville's Hockey Team. Each pint of Slewfoot purchased benefits the Hockey Team. We will also be serving Slewfoot at Alpine Ice Arena durring home games. What is Slewfoot? In hockey it is kicking an opponents skate out from behind and is considered a cheap shot. At Cumberland it is a session beer, which allows enjoyment of multiple pints without feeling too inebriated.

The Christmas Keister Returns
The Christmas Keister returns on Christmas Eve. We will be tapping the last keg of Christmas Keister that was brewed in December '08 on December 24th.
An Old Ale, or sometimes called a Winter Warmer, this is brewed with over 90% pale malt and a mix of roasted malts to give it a rich brown color. American Hops are used to balance this malty ale; Columbus hops for bittering and Cascade hops for aroma. The strength in alcohol will help warm that winter chill but be careful or you may find yourself on your keister.

Its that time of year...

Its that time of year,
The Decorations are up,
The Malls are crowded,
The kids are trying to stay on the nice list,
and most people are full of holiday cheer.
To keep you full of Holiday Cheer we brewed a 15 barrel batch of American IPA. We took the popular Modus Hoperandi recipe tweaked it a little with some flaked barley and changed the hop schedule. Brewed with 8 lbs each of Columbus and Cascade Hops, and then dry hopped with a further 8 lbs of Amarillo hops. Over a pound and a half of hops per barrel gives this beer a bitter bite, as well as a pleasant hop aroma.

Great Taste of the Midwest 2009
Another Great Trip up To Maddison for The Great Taste of The Midwest. This year we brought a larger contingent and more beer then last year. The beer was well received as with 10 minutes left in the festival we blew the last of our three 50 liter kegs, the two 5 gallon kegs of bourbon barrel beer had disappeared much earlier. It was great to see this are well represented as all four local attended this year.
Yerba Mate Pale Ale
After numerous demands, Yerba Mate Pale Ale is back on tap at Cumberland Brews this week. This pale ale is brewed with only organic malts, and a 20lb tea bag of Yerba Mate is added at the end of boil, replacing the aroma hops. A cask conditioned pin will be tapped Thursday, with Kegs to follow on Friday.

This past Saturday we headed to Indianapolis for their Microbrewers Festival. We had a wonderful time with the 4,000+ people in attendance. It was good to see our customers who joined us at the fest. We went through 4 kegs of beer (54Gallons) in four hours!
One of those kegs was the debut our new batch of Yerba Mate Pale Ale. It was a great success and we will be unveiling it on Cask this Thursday and on Tap on Friday. Come and enjoy a pint with us! See you soon
