This dry hopped firkin (10gal) is 10% abv and sold by half pint only

Pilsner

In time for the warm weather to roll through we are tapping our second lager of the year today. This Bohemian style Pilsner was brewed with 80% Pilsen malt as well as a touch of light caramel malts to give it a deep golden color. Plenty of Czech Saaz hops were added to the kettle for flavor and aroma as well as a pleasant bitterness to compliment the dry lager. Look for it also at the Flannagan's Beer Festival this Sunday.

Also on tap at the restaraunt is Quest Outdoors' Canoe Oil. Inspired by the need for a cold beer to get that canoe moving sometimes. Canoe Oil is a twist on the cream ale, using a lighter malt and swapping the flaked corn for flaked rice. Last week brought the return of Goatboy Bock, both at the pub but also sent out to our local distributor. This is the first lager of what hopes to be a four part lager series. The second of the series, a Bohemian Pilsner, is lagering in the fermentor and should be on tap around mid may. The third is an India Cream Lager a hybrid cross between a cream ale and a IPA that is fermenting with our lager yeast. The fourth Lager is yet to be decided.

Recently Ricky has been cranking out a variety of different IPA's on the small system. This August is Cumberland Brews' 10th Aniversary. To honour this milestonethe brewers will be taking over control of the taps for one day, replacing them with 10 of our favorite IPA's from 2010. More details to come on this special event.

Summer Tour 2010

April 22
Taste of Derby
Louisville, KY
Slugger Field

April 30 - May 2,
St. Louis Microfest
St. Louis, MO
Forrest Park

May 8
Lexington Craft Beer Festival
Lexington, KY
Red Mile Racetrack

June 5
Keg Liquors' Fest of Ale
Clarksville, IN
St Anthony's of Padua

June 19
Zoo Brew
Evansville, IN
Mesker Park Zoo

July 17
Microbrewers Festival
Indianapolis, IN

Aug 14
Great Taste of the Midwest
Madison, WI
Olin-Turville Park

Aug 28
Brew at the Zoo
Louisville, KY
Louisville Zoo

Sep 16-18
Great American Beer Festival
Denver, CO

2 Brewers 1 Pint

Which came first, the beer or the name?

In this case the name came first over a few shared pints with the BBC brewers. For those unfamiliar with the reference, some might consider you lucky. After coming up with the name we needed to create a brew to match. So off we went to the Louisville Beer Store for some more brainstorming. The resulting creation is a German/Indian Bropwn Ale. The two Malts we selected were Golden Promise and Brown Malt. To make this Brown Ale unique we fermented it with a Berliner Weisse yeast and large late hop additions of German Hallertau Hops. The addition of Jaggery, a palm sugar from India, provides a nutty aromaas well as a dryness to the final product. Two batches of this beer were brewed, one each at Cumberland Brewery and BBC (St Matthews). Although brewed to the same recipe, it will be interesting to note the slight differences that come form the different set of equipment at each brewery.

ABV 6%
IBU 28

The Woo

Now on tap, The Woo and Runner-Up Ale. The same malt was used to brew two distinct beer styles. The first runnings from the mash was used to brew The Woo, an American Barleywine. The sugar rich first runnings allow this beer to reach a higher alcohol strength, 10% ABV. To balance the intense maltiness 22 lbs of hops were added to the kettle, almost enough to clog the system, and then another 8 lbs of Cascade hops were used for dry hopping.
Not wanting to waste the remaing sugars in the mash, we used the second runnings to brew whats traditionaly called a Small Beer. Runner-Up Ale is significantly lighter in strength and color then its older sibling. The Styrian Golding hops provide a floral aroma the complements the flavors from the belgian yeast strain we fermented it with.

The Woo
Balreywine
ABV 10%
IBU 89

Runner-Up Ale
Small Beer
ABV 3.75%
IBU 15

Cumberland Brewery @ Louisville Beer Store

Sunday 17th at 3:00pm
The Louisville Beer Store
746 East Market Street
http://louisvillebeerstore.com/

Something Evil is Brewing

Slewfoot

New this week at Cumberland Brews, Slewfoot is an amber session ale. The strength in alcohol will help warm that winter chill but be careful or you may find yourself on your keister.
ABV 7.2%
IBU 40.5
OG 17.1

Its that time of year...

Its that time of year,
The Decorations are up,
The Malls are crowded,
The kids are trying to stay on the nice list,
and most people are full of holiday cheer.

To keep you full of Holiday Cheer we brewed a 15 barrel batch of American IPA. We took the popular Modus Hoperandi recipe tweaked it a little with some flaked barley and changed the hop schedule. Brewed with 8 lbs each of Columbus and Cascade Hops, and then dry hopped with a further 8 lbs of Amarillo hops. Over a pound and a half of hops per barrel gives this beer a bitter bite, as well as a pleasant hop aroma.

Keep your holiday cheer up with a pint of Mary Hop-Mas
ABV 7.3%
IBU 80

Cask Friday

Skip The Shopping, and join us at Cumberland Brews for Cask Friday, we will be tapping three cask conditioned ales at noon to help wash down those leftovers.

Firkin of Modus Hoperandi - 10 gls of American IPA.
