Last week brought the return of Goatboy Bock, both at the pub but also sent out to our local distributor. This is the first lager of what hopes to be a four part lager series. The second of the series, a Bohemian Pilsner, is lagering in the fermentor and should be on tap around mid may. The third is an India Cream Lager a hybrid cross between a cream ale and a IPA that is fermenting with our lager yeast. The fourth Lager is yet to be decided.

Recently Ricky has been cranking out a variety of different IPA's on the small system. This August is Cumberland Brews' 10th Aniversary. To honour this milestonethe brewers will be taking over control of the taps for one day, replacing them with 10 of our favorite IPA's from 2010. More details to come on this special event.

Summer Tour 2010

April 22
Taste of Derby
Louisville, KY
Slugger Field

April 30 - For those unfamiliar with the reference, some might consider you lucky. After coming up with the name we needed to create a brew to match. So off we went to the Louisville Beer Store for some more brainstorming. The resulting creation is a German/Indian Bropwn Ale. The two Malts we selected were Golden Promise and Brown Malt. To make this Brown Ale unique we fermented it with a Berliner Weisse yeast and large late hop additions of German Hallertau Hops. The addition of Jaggery, a palm sugar from India, provides a nutty aromaas well as a dryness to the final product. Two batches of this beer were brewed, one each at Cumberland Brewery and BBC (St Matthews). Although brewed to the same recipe, it will be interesting to note the slight differences that come form the different set of equipment at each brewery.

ABV 6%
IBU 28

The Woo

Now on tap, The Woo and Runner-Up Ale. The same malt was used to brew two distinct beer styles. The first runnings from the mash was used to brew The Woo, an American Barleywine. The sugar rich first runnings allow this beer to reach a higher alcohol strength, 10% ABV. To balance the intense maltiness 22 lbs of hops were added to the kettle, almost enough to clog the system, and then another 8 lbs of Cascade hops were used for dry hopping.
Not wanting to waste the remaing sugars in the mash, we used the second runnings to brew whats traditionaly called a Small Beer. Runner-Up Ale is significantly lighter in strength and color then its older sibling. This beer was brewed as part of our sponsorship of University of Louisville's Hockey Team. Each pint of Slewfoot purchased benefits the Hockey Team. We will also be serving Slewfoot at Alpine Ice Arena durring home games. What is Slewfoot? In hockey it is kicking an opponents skate out from behind and is considered a cheap shot. At Cumberland it is a session beer, which allows enjoyment of multiple pints without feeling too inebriated.

ABV 4.2%
IBU 15.5

We will also be tapping a cask of Slewfoot drty hopped with Fuggle Hops on 1-07-10

Upcoming Home Games
01/22/10 @ midnight vs EKU
01/29/10 @ midnight vs Purdue
01/30/10 @ 6:00pm vs Purdue
02/06/10 @ 6:00pm vs EKU

The Christmas Keister Returns

The Christmas Keister returns on Christmas Eve. The pools are open, the schools are getting out and the weather is warming up. In our opinion there is no better way to beat the heat then a nice cold craft beer. Fortunatly there are plenty of opportunities this summer with plenty of beer Festivals. This season Kicks off this weekend with a double dip. On Saturday we will be crossing the river for Keg Liquor's Fest of Ale. On Sunday the breweries will be taking over Morton Ave for The Great Flanagan's Beer Festival.

Cumberland will also be working with BBC for two events this summer, the first of which will be The Smoke Out on June 27th. This event hosted by BBC will feature Smoked beers as well as Smoked turkey, smoke cigars, smoked veggies, smoked pretzels, smoke pipes, smoked meat, smoked nuts, smokin hot babes, smoke ciggs, smoked brisket, smoke songs all day long, smoked oysters, smoke shrimp, fire trucks and fire fighters and all things smoked. Later in the summer Cumberland will be hosting a Cask beer night, more details to follow soon.

Other highlights include the increasingly popular Brew at the Zoo; Traveling to Madison for the second oldest American beer festival The great taste of the Midwest; and the Granddaddy of beer fests, The Great American Beer Festival.

Enjoy the weather, enjoy the beer and we will keep you updated on future events,
Cheers

New Summer Hours!

We are back to our Old Summer Schedule.... Turkey Tail Pale Ale will be served, our Pale ale brewed with Columbus and Cascade hops, and then generously hopped with Goldings. It is the second oldest beer festival in North America, and with the high level of organization it is easy to see why. Mark and Cameron carpooled up with the brewers from Browning's, Brian and Rush, in a rented van. The van's shocks were put to the ultimate test with seven full kegs and tapping equipment stored in the back. Upon arriving in Madison on Friday, we definitely got the VIP treatment. Volunteers were there to unload our kegs, while other's carted our equipment over to our booth. The only thing that brewery representatives had to do was enjoy the free BBQ and beer set out for us. After unloading the beer, and checking into the hotel, we were again treated to some more free food and dinner. Our host was the Great Dane Brewpub. and we sampled some great local beer, as well as some authentic Wisconsin brats.

Saturday morning we arrived at the festival to a food spread including breakfast burritos, donuts and coffee. Shortly afterwards a much needed Bloody Mary Wagon made its rounds, rumor has it that Mark was seen following behind it for the next 30 minutes. After set up was complete, we had some time to wander around the festival site before it began. Located in a park on the lake shore, with the Capital building visible from across the water made for a great sight, but even better was the 6 big tents for the breweries. The festival atmosphere was great, as the ticket limit kept the crowd to a reasonable size. While pouring beer we were routinely questioned on Louisville's inclusion in a Midwest event. But after a few samples we were able to explain Louisville's identity crisis as a Midwest city in a Southern State. Everyone from the organizers, volunteers, and attendees thanked us for making the trip.

Post festival we were again treated to a dinner buffet while the crowd exited, making it easier for us to pick up our equipment. Following a night out on the town, we headed back to Louisville, thankfully a few hundred lbs lighter on beer. We are definitely looking forward to attending the event next year, and recommend it for those planning on making a trip, though plan ahead as the 5,000 tickets apparently sell out in an hour.

Festival Slide Show
Who are These People?

Recent Beer Events

It is getting to the busy time of the year for beer festivals. Handling cash instead of grain kept the brewers on their toes, as we said throughout the night, "We are Brewers not accountants". All three breweries went through alot of beer and hopefully introduced some new people to Craft Beer. Afterwards he did the next logical thing in working for the Cumberland with his bigger sister.

Meet the Brewers Part1

Cameron Finnis -
Born in the great wilds of the north, just 45 minutes northwest of Toronto, he perfected the art of snowball making at a young age. Outraged at the adoption of the dollar coin instead of the dollar bill, his family quickly fled Canada for a new Kentucky home. After many dedicated years of hard work at the Middle and High School level, he was finally able to stop saying "Eh?" all the time and pronounce "Out" like a southerner.

The next five years were spent studying <strike>upon barstools around town</strike> at the University of Louisville. Five years ago he happily lived out a great Canadian cinematic moment, when he returned home to tell his parents he got a job at a brewery. He thanks Bob and Doug McKenzie for their inspiration.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
